State Climatologist

Dr. Mike Brown

Mike is the State Climatologist for the state of Mississippi.  Mike is also a professor of meteorology/climatology and Mississippi State University.  His research interests are diverse and include land-surface-atmosphere interactions and severe local storms, public perception of warnings, and various climatologies.  Dr. Brown has published articles related to tornado damage paths and enhanced convection, lightning probabilities at NCAA stadiums, seasonal predictors of mallard duck migrations, and thermodynamic characteristics of severe local storms in the southeast U.S.

"One of the greastest aspects of my work as the State Climatologist, is interacting with the public, through school groups, civic organizations, and meeting with growers and producers.  Growing up in rural Illinois on a small family farm has given me an appreciation of the numerous concerns facing farmers today.  I hope that I, and this office can be a resource for all Mississippians"

Hannah Fridgen

Hannah is an undergraduate student at Mississippi State University from Champaign, IL.  She is majoring in Professional Meteorology and minoring in Mathematics. Hannah was a Meteorology Intern at Advanced Agrilytics where she helped develop a weather app and provided evapotranspiration and climate reports to growers and precision agronomists. Her internship research focused on soil moisture storage for locations throughout the Midwest. She enjoys the agriculture sector of Meteorology because she grew up in a farming community and has seen how weather impacts the industry.

Hannah also volunteers at the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library as well as First Baptist Church of Starkville with preschoolers. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and family, attending sporting events especially women’s basketball, and playing golf.

Elizabeth Sutton

She is currently volunteering for the National Weather Service office in her hometown of Birmingham, AL.  Aside from meteorology, her hobbies include keeping reptiles and arachnids, spending quality time with family, playing video games, volunteering with the MSU Block & Bridle Club, and the occasional game of golf.  After graduation, she plans to work at an NWS Weather Forecast Office as a forecaster.
